Day 7: LFC TV at the Euros
LFC TV's Matt Critchley is in Poland to bring us daily updates as 16 nations compete for the European Championships crown. Here is his account of yesterday's events.
Well there can be no doubting that yesterday was the day of the tournament so far. Two amazing games, some fantastic goals, all still to play for in Group B and my tip for the trophy Germany, safely through to the quarter-finals.
I imagine Daniel Agger and his Danish team-mates will be kicking themselves today for missing an opportunity to take at least a point off Portugal. On a rare off-night for Ronaldo, Denmark got themselves back into the game only to give it away again in the last five minutes. There is a chance that their victory over Holland may now count for nothing.
But will Germany play a full strength team in the next game having already qualified? Could there be a chance for the Danes? There is a theory, re-affirmed by Ruud Gullit on TV over here last night, that Germany would do anything to see Holland knocked out of the tournament. They are two sides with a real history and rivalry - the Dutch still have an outside chance of qualification despite losing their first two games. The results on Sunday will certainly make for interesting reading.
The second half of Germany v Holland was the setting for my proposed catch-up with Jason McAteer in the bar on the 40th floor of our hotel. The only problem being that when I got there, Jason had already gone to bed. At 9.30!
The rumours are that he may have 'enjoyed' himself a little too much whilst visiting the Ireland camp a few days ago and, away from the team of course, sampled some of the local nightlife in Gdansk. Mr McAteer has to remember he's 40 now and recovery time from such events is slow!
It's his 41st birthday on Monday actually, a fact I'm sure he'll be glad I've reminded both him and you of.
But will his beloved Ireland still be in the tournament by then? Unlikely I'd say - unless they can pull off a shock result against Spain tonight. I'll be watching Italy v Croatia at the San Lorenzo restaurant here in Warsaw - apparently THE place to be to watch the Azzuri in action when in Poland. I'll bring you updates on that tomorrow.
I also have a get together this afternoon with former Reds midfielder Bolo Zenden, one of the nicest men in football. He is taking part in a Legends 5-a-side game in the Carlsberg Fan Zone in the Polish capital - up against a pub team from London that won a competition to be here. Should be a good day.
