The winger then volleyed a second after intelligent work from Glen Johnson before Dirk Kuyt capped an explosive first 16 minutes by adding a third for Kenny Dalglish's men.
Moussa Dembele gave the home side a glimmer of hope with a fine finish from Bobby Zamora's pass. However, the best was yet to come from Maxi. The midfielder smashed home a 30-yard effort that swerved past the 'keeper to clinch his second hat-trick in the space of a couple of weeks.
All that was left to cap another memorable night on the road with Kenny Dalglish's rejuvenated Reds was a goal from the man whose name had echoed around Craven Cottage all evening.
Jonjo Shelvey picked him out with an inch-perfect pass and Luis Suarez rounded Schwarzer before rolling the ball into an empty net for 5-1.
Steve Sidwell fired a late consolation goal for the home side.
