'Skrtel is the best I've played with'

Ahead of each Anfield clash, the 'Just Can't Get Enough' feature conducted a quirky interview with a member of the first-team squad in which the questions ranged from football-related issues to dressing room banter and life off the pitch.

Over the next few days, Liverpoolfc.com will be publishing a selection of these interviews - and today it's the turn of Luis Suarez, who explains why Martin Skrtel is the best defender he's ever played with and how he reigns supreme over Maxi and Sebastian Coates when it comes to video games.

What boots did you wear as a kid?

My first pair were Adidas when I was about eight or nine years old. They were a present to me and had the signature of Enzo Francescoli on them. I was very happy with them as he was a great player for Uruguay.

Do you have a regular matchday routine?

At Ajax or with Uruguay I had my own routine, but whenever I didn't play well I always changed the routine. Before every game at Ajax I would listen to music but here I tend to focus on my concentration and speak to teammates like Seba (Coates) and Lucas about the match.

Who were the biggest influences on your early career?

There were two guys in Uruguay called Wilson and Jose Luis and they helped me a lot. When I was a child I wasn't able to get to the pitch where we played football and they always used to transport me there and back. They would also speak to me and advise me. There was a time when I was thinking of joining another club but they spoke with me and told me it was better to stay where I was. Those two guys helped me a lot.

Who is your favourite forward in the world?

For me it was Gabriel Batistuta. I think he was the best player. He was a number nine with plenty of character and he scored great goals.

Did you ever play against the Uruguayan team called Liverpool?

Yes, I did. They are a good team but they were a bit different to this Liverpool as they played in blue and black shirts! Sometimes it created confusion because you would hear guys talking about Liverpool and they would often mean this Liverpool from England rather than the one from Uruguay!

Which grounds do you enjoy playing at?

Apart from Anfield, Wembley, the Amsterdam ArenA and and the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg I played at with Uruguay during the World Cup.

What is your favourite goal celebration?

I have a few. I always kiss my right wrist for my daughter (her name, Delfina, is tattooed on it) and I kiss my finger for my wife. My other celebration started when I was at Ajax. I spoke to my wife and to my brother because I wanted a special celebration. When I was a child I saw many players with their own regular celebrations such as Alan Shearer and Ronaldo so I wanted to have my own.

Do you have any hobbies?

I like to play on the PlayStation. I enjoy that. When we go to the hotel before a match I play with Maxi and with Seba. We play Pro Evolution Soccer but Maxi and Seba are bad players - I am the best!

Are there any other sports you enjoy?

I like tennis and have tried it since I moved to Liverpool. I like watching tennis too.

Did you pass your driving test first time?

Yes!

What was your first car?

It was an Opel Astra when I was at Groningen.

Who is the funniest of your teammates?

I would say Maxi because I speak Spanish with him but maybe another player would say somebody different.

What is your favourite music?

I like a type of music called cumbia from Uruguay. It is a little bit like salsa.

Your own 'song' has really taken off among Liverpool supporters since you joined the club...

I know the song well now! It's great for me. When you come to a new club and the fans have a song for you so soon, it is brilliant. I am happy when I hear the fans sing my song. It is really important for me.

We noticed on Twitter that you went to the cinema recently...

Yes. I like watching English TV, it helps me try to understand the language. But the film we saw wasn't good!

Whose is the best shirt that you've swapped?

I have swapped many but Andres Iniesta's would probably be my favourite. I like this tradition because two or three years ago I would always try to swap shirts with the biggest players.

Who is the best defender you have played with and against?

Right now, I would say Martin Skrtel is the best I have played with. Martin is a brilliant defender and this season I think he has been at his best. There are many good ones I have played against but the most difficult would be Thiago Silva from Milan. He is a very good defender and is always a tough opponent. He is quick, strong and all-round a very good player.
