Academy inspired by war heroes
Three aspiring goalkeepers from the Academy recently enjoyed an inspirational talk from war heroes who served their country in Afghanistan.
Tyrell Belford, Jamie Stephens and Yusuf Mersin were given the unique opportunity to meet up with passionate Reds Andrew Grant and Paul Paterson, who told them about their experiences and the importance of being good role models.
Indeed, Kopite Andy is a truly inspirational figure and a hero to many people. He lost both his legs during conflict in Afghanistan and is now involved in giving motivational talks.
The evening also included a speech from Brigadier Neil Fitgerald MBE of the Commander 42 (North West brigade. It highlighted how important Liverpool FC is in the community and also showed how the players can learn from other industries.
Some of the key attributes pinpointed as important during the talk was resilience, commitment and courage - which all apply to professional sport.
Academy NextGen stopper Belford said: "It was interesting to get an insight into what life is like in the army and we had a great talk from experienced soldiers who have been at war.
"It was very inspiring to young people like ourselves and it was an honour to be there representing Liverpool FC."
Former Swindon Town 'keeper Stephens added: "The presentation was very inspiring and it was brilliant to see the jobs and roles the army carry out for our country and community.
"I felt honoured to be with so many top-class servants for this country and it was a great experience."
Ex-Millwall stopper Mersin said: "I learnt a lot from the presentation from the experienced army members. There were lots of very inspirational people there who have been through a lot and it was a pleasure to meet them."
