Martin Kelly believes the Liverpool supporters could be in for a treat this season with the style of play Brendan Rodgers wants to bring to Anfield.

Having joined up with the squad this week after his break following Euro 2012, the defender insists he and the players are excited by the ideas of the new manager.

"The training sessions have been enjoyable and it's total football," said Kelly.

"It's hard on the fitness but after the session you really feel as though you have benefited from it and in the long term I think everyone will benefit from this style of play.

"This style suits my game, whether I'm playing centre-half or right-back, and everyone is excited for the new season.

"It's a positive way to play and everyone is enjoying it. I think any fan who has seen the squad train over the past couple of weeks will be really excited about the new season."

As for his own aims in 2012-13, competition for the right-back slot is fierce as he again competes with Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan for a place in the starting XI.

He is eager to impress the new manager and build on the experience he gained from being called into the England squad for Euro 2012.

He added: "It was a really positive experience for me to go away with England and it was a massive privilege for me to go away with such quality players.

"They accepted me so quickly and the other Liverpool players helped me feel right at home. I took a lot from those four weeks.

"We did a lot of defensive work and I definitely learned more about positional play, and because of that experience I've settled back into training quicker than I usually do.

"I'm always eager to impress. I tried to impress the past managers at this club and it's the same again with the new manager. I know my opportunity will come again and when I get the chance I want to impress as much as possible.

"It's great to be back with the lads and getting to work with the new manager. We have had our break now, we love our football and can't wait to get started."
