Do...

Get your Belarusian visa before arrival. It is possible to get a visa on arrival at Minsk International Airport, but only if you have a letter of invitation from a Belarusian tourist agency, Gomel FC or a Belarusian individual.

Keep with you your mobile, money, passports and any other valuables if travelling by train. There is little crime in Belarus but there have been instances of theft from travellers, especially on sleeper trains to Warsaw and Moscow.

Register with the local police office if you are staying more than five working days in Belarus. If you are staying in a hotel this will be arranged by the hotel. There are fines for not registering.

Be aware that hotels may want to keep a copy of your passport for registration purposes. This is ok, but do keep a copy of the personal details page of your passport with you.

Be aware that it is not possible to get Belarusian rubles (BYR) outside of Belarus. Sterling is not widely accepted for exchange at exchange outlets in Belarus, but US dollars and euros are. You should only exchange foreign currency at government licensed booths. It is also possible to withdraw BYR from ATMs using UK bank cards.

Be aware that under a 2006 bilateral agreement it is not necessary on arrival for British citizens to take out the medical insurance which is mandatory for other foreign nationals. However, do ensure that you have adequate travel insurance.

Be aware that English is not widely spoken in Belarus.

Do not...

Take photographs of government buildings, military installations and uniformed officials.

Drink the tap water - it is recommended to drink only bottled water.

Attempt to take any alcoholic beverages into the stadium.
