Former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia is the subject of an unorthodox tribute in his home country – a rock song.

A collection of Finnish musicians, calling themselves The Left Foot Company, have written and recorded "Big Sam", which hails the centre-back who featured at Anfield for a decade.

Now manager of German side Bayer Leverkusen, Hyypia returns to Merseyside today for a pre-season friendly against the Reds.

The words of the song, which track Hyypia's career and describes the challenges he faced in the Barclays Premier League, were written by his youth coach, Jari Haapala.

Haapala told the Liverpool Echo: "For me the song is about how hard it was training in the cold weather and snow in Finland. It's about making people understand what we went through."
