Shanklys open new Anfield lounge
A number of families took the opportunity to enjoy a day out together as Liverpool wrapped up their pre-season schedule against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday – but among the many inside Anfield, there was one very special party in attendance.
Relatives of legendary Reds boss Bill Shankly were on hand to open the club's new 'Shanks' hospitality lounge.
Having listened to supporter feedback throughout last season, the club extensively renovated both the Shanks and Paisley lounges over the course of the summer.
The Shankly family were joined at the opening by a number of Anfield greats, including Ian Callaghan, Ron Yeats, David Fairclough and Phil Neal - and all were left suitably impressed by the revamp.
Shankly's grand-daughter, Karen Gill, said: "It's very futuristic and modern, but they've also kept an eye on the past too with all of my granddad's quotes on the wall.
"It's a nice combination and the way we should be - looking to the future while also remembering our past. It's really good and I like it.
"It's a good idea to have a room in his memory and it's trying to reflect his personality. I think he would have loved it."
Chris Carline, Shankly's grandson, added: "It's terrific of the club to pay their respects to him continually.
"What they've done with the renovation is so classy, and for the family to walk around it and see all the photos and quotes on the wall is a real trip down memory lane for us.
"It's important to continue to treasure the memory of him because he laid the foundations for everything we see here in front of us today.
"His achievements speak for themselves and it's great the club keep celebrating him."
