Luis Suarez has set his sights firmly on firing Liverpool into the top four this season – and the Uruguayan is hopeful that in seasons to come he can be part of a Reds side that will challenge for the Barclays Premier League title.

In an in-depth interview with journalists at the club's Melwood training base, Suarez spoke about his dream of representing the Reds in the Champions League.

And while the No.7 is fully aware that in order to achieve their aims, the team must improve on last year's Barclays Premier League form, he remains confident that the Reds can secure a top-four spot come the end of this campaign.

"I recognise that the season wasn't very good for us last year in the league," said Suarez. "A team like Liverpool always wants to be in the Champions League. That is where it should be. That is where I dream of playing for at least one season with Liverpool.

"I've still got hopes that we can make the Champions League this season. I believe we can (one day) win the Premier League if we do everything right.

"It is always a difficult thing to start with a new manager and a new system but I think we played fairly well at West Brom (on the opening day of the season) and we knew it would be difficult. But we trust in the new manager and we are all very happy with him."

It was Brendan Rodgers who hailed Suarez's commitment to the Liverpool cause after the Uruguayan put pen to paper on a new long-term contract at Anfield in August, insisting that the striker 'loves football' and 'football is his life'.

And Suarez appeared to reaffirm these assertions when he spoke at length about his devotion to training and how hard work has helped mould him into the player he is today.

"I love football and I put everything into it all the time," he said. "I love the game so much and I am so passionate about it. I have worked very hard to get where I am and the 90 minutes on the pitch are so important to me. That is why I fight so hard.

"It was very hard for me as a kid to get through as a footballer in Uruguay. I had to sacrifice a lot of things to get where I am.

"From time to time I do remember as a kid playing football without shoes. Now I don't want to miss any of the opportunities that are open to me. That's why I play so hard on the pitch."

Suarez's dedication to ensuring he seizes every opportunity on the field led him to offer a frank assessment of his performance against West Brom at the Hawthorns last week, when the Reds suffered an opening day defeat to Steve Clarke's side.

"I need to take my time more when I do have chances," he said. "Sometimes I am rushing at chances too much and I know the problem is mine. It is up to me to sort it out and to start scoring goals.

"I am annoyed about last Saturday because I did the hardest thing, which was to get free of my marker. And after that I missed the chances. But that is why we have training - to try and tweak these little things and make them better.

"In Holland I scored a lot of lucky goals. If you look back on my goals in Holland you will see that, a lot of times, I didn't even hit them properly but they went in. If there is one thing that is missing in this country, it is that bit of luck.

"That can make a big difference. I am hoping that it will return and then I will score more."
