Hearts first appeared in Europe in 1958-59 when they participated in the European Cup - six seasons before Liverpool gained entry.

They won only four of 19 away league games last season scoring 15 goals - only Aberdeen scored fewer on the road in the SPL.

Their best ever European season came in 1988-89 when they reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup, losing 2-1 to Bayern Munich.

The most goals ever scored by a Hearts player in a season was achieved by Barney Battles who scored 44 in 1930-31. His father, also named Barney, played for Liverpool in the 1890s.
