The statistics go to some length in showing how Steven Gerrard and Joe Allen dominated the game from the centre of the park. The skipper touched the ball 122 times while his central-midfield partner took 123 touches.
On the other hand, no Sunderland midfielder touched the ball more than 60 times (James McClean).
Allen was as diligent as ever in possession. The Welsh international played a total of 113 passes (more than any other player) at 91.2 per cent pass accuracy. Raheem Sterling played significantly less balls (35) but had the best pass accuracy of Brendan Rodgers' men (94.3 per cent).
Liverpool's defence shared the workload, each making one interception over the 90 minutes. Glen Johnson carried the game to Sunderland and fired four shots on goal. Martin Kelly won 100 per cent of his aerial duels and Daniel Agger had the most touches of the back four with 86.
Gerrard made more tackles than any other player on the park, launching into eight challenges while full-back Kelly followed him with six.
Luis Suarez registered six strikes on goal. Two of these efforts came from inside Simon Mignolet's penalty area and one of those was on target for the Uruguayan's equaliser. Fabio Borini took three shots on goal.
At the other end Louis Saha and Stephen Fletcher had just one shot each; however, the latter made his solitary effort count when he gave Sunderland the lead on 29 minutes.
Jonjo Shelvey tried his luck on four occasions and three of his efforts came from outside the box.
