Ahead of Wednesday night's Capital One Cup third-round tie at West Bromwich Albion, first-team coach Mike Marsh spoke to Liverpoolfc.com about his pride at the many youngsters from the Academy making a real impression in Brendan Rodgers' team.

Following the exploits of Raheem Sterling and Adam Morgan this season, Spanish starlet Suso and U21s skipper Andre Wisdom have also made positive appearances in the first XI in the last week.

With Rodgers set to rotate his team again at the Hawthorns, Marsh insists whoever gets a chance won't let anybody down.

Firstly Mike, looking back on Sunday, what was the feeling like in the dressing room after the game?

We were really disappointed because we played well enough to take something from the game, so to take nothing from it was disappointing. We all felt a bit down but we can take a lot of positives from the way we played.

How frustrating is it not to be getting the points your performances have deserved?

It is frustrating but you've got to take your chances when they present themselves and not concede silly goals. Until we stop doing that, we will be in the same position. We are playing some good stuff at the minute and could be sitting in the top four with the way we have played, but that hasn't been the case and we are going to have to try and improve on that.

Several decisions appeared to go against Liverpool on Sunday but how pleased were you and the rest of the management team with the attitude shown by the players - especially when you went down to 10 men?

The players were excellent. Even when we went down to 10 men, I still thought we were the better side and played the better football. It bodes well for the future.

How encouraging is it to have dominated and outplayed the two Manchester clubs at Anfield in large periods - what does that say about the team going forward?

It's good. At one stage of the game we had 65 per cent of the possession. Obviously we had Jonjo sent off just before half-time and then it was almost 50-50, so if we can keep 11 men on the pitch and keep 65 per cent of the possession I'm sure we will win more games than we lose.

Are you and the manager both confident that it will all come together, slot into place and Liverpool will get that first league win soon?

Yes and it's slowly taking place. We had a positive result at Sunderland, even though I felt we should have won the game, and we played really well and scored five goals in Europe against Young Boys.  We played well against Manchester United and it's now just a case of getting the right result.

Steven Gerrard was one of the stand-out performers against United...

He's a great player and he is playing really well. He is carrying the team forward and is playing really well at the moment.

Several youngsters have had opportunities this season - and we saw Suso make his Barclays Premier League debut at the weekend. What did you make of his performance?

I thought he was excellent. He looked as though he wasn't overawed by the occasion. You have to remember we were playing Manchester United at home and especially with the occasion it was as well, and he handled the ball well. He's got the arrogance that he can play in these big occasions and I thought he played particularly well.

It's a massive opportunity for the young lads to play against Manchester United and to be given that call by the boss, isn't it?

The manager trusts the young players. They have been training at Melwood and the manager can see that they can play. It's just about having the opportunity for them to showcase their talents and the manager is not shy about putting them forward.

Andre Wisdom made his debut against Young Boys. He settled in just fine alongside the likes of Jamie Carragher, didn't he?

He did and he's got great attributes. He is a big, strong and physical guy and uses the ball well. He was given the opportunity and he took it on the night.

What did you make of his celebration?

Obviously you can see he doesn't score too many goals the way he carried on!  I was delighted for Andre. He has worked really hard, he's playing in an unfamiliar position because he normally plays centre-back for the reserves, but he got an opportunity at right-back and he took his chance and made the most of it.

We said when Raheem Sterling burst onto the first-team scene about the importance of managing expectations. Now with the likes of Suso and Wisdom, how important is it we maintain that especially as these lads are still teenagers?

It's important. We can't pile too much pressure on them. With Andre being involved in and around the first team it takes a bit of the limelight off Raheem if we start talking about other players. Again, I thought Raheem was outstanding on Sunday and thought he was unfortunate to be withdrawn, but it was with good reasons as we had to re-adjust with Jonjo getting sent off.

You know all of these young players really well from your time at the Academy. You must be so proud?

I'm delighted and there's a shed load of them at the moment training with us due to injuries and what not. They are all playing really well in training and to be a young player at the moment with Liverpool, I don't think there's been a better time to be given an opportunity. They are here, they are training well with the first team and if they are given the opportunity then I'm sure they will take it.

It gives a great message to the other U21s and the U18s that if you work hard in training there's every chance you are going to get that opportunity...

Of course it is and we are competing on many fronts. We have the Capital One Cup on Wednesday and we also have the Europa League, so there's opportunities for them to take their chance.

As you say, West Brom in the Capital One Cup then on Wednesday night - how are you feeling because we know the injury situation is not the best at this moment in time?

I'm sure we will make a couple of changes but we'll have to manage it. We've got good players in the squad and whoever plays on the night will do themselves justice.

Can we expect a similar team to the one that played in Switzerland?

The team hasn't been decided yet but I'm sure we will make one or two changes, obviously bearing in mind we've got Norwich away at the weekend and we've got one or two injury concerns.

The opening day defeat to West Brom was a big disappointment - what did you, the manager and the players learn from that game?

Ideally to keep all 11 players on the pitch. I think we were in control for most of the game but they scored a fantastic opening goal and we went in 1-0 down at half-time, which I don't think was a fair reflection. After losing a man and conceding two penalties we then were 2-0 down and from then on lost our shape. It was a freak result but up until half-time we were the better side and should have gone into the break ahead.

West Brom have certainly had a great start to their season, haven't they?

They have done very well. They have got a few positive results and are near the top of the league but on the evidence of what we saw on the day, which we can only go by, we have got nothing to fear on the night.

Will there be a different attitude because of what happened on the opening day?

I wouldn't think so. We know what to expect so there are going to be no surprises. It's a different night, a different game and I'm sure they will have one or two changes in personnel if they rest one or two of their players.

The manager has spoken about the league being the priority in terms of where he ranks the Europa League and the other competitions. How important is the league cup this season considering Liverpool are the holders?

All the competitions have their importance but we must understand that the league is our priority. We've got an important game against Norwich on Saturday and we need our more experienced players to be available for that game. We might go into this game with one or two players who people don't recognise as much as your Daniel Aggers of this world.

Even though it's a different competition and the squad will be rotated somewhat, what can it do for confidence ahead of the trip to Carrow Road?

Luckily enough we have been playing most midweeks with games against Hearts, Young Boys and now West Brom, so they are not lacking in confidence and certainly not lacking in quality. The performances have been really good. I know in the league we haven't been able to get the three points but if we keep playing the way we are then I'm sure that's just a matter of time.

Steve Clarke has made a great start at West Brom - what have you made of them so far?

They have been excellent and got some really good results not just against ourselves. They gave Everton a good beating, they have some good results on the road and he has had a really good start, so good luck to him.
