Tributes have been paid to New York Red Bulls coach and Liverpool fan Michael Jones who was tragically killed early Sunday morning in New York.

The 25-year-old from near Southport, was a coach on the Red Bulls youth training programme, and his club have released the following statement:

"We are aware of this tragedy and on behalf of the entire organisation, want to send our most heartfelt condolences to Michael's family, friends and loved ones. He was a tremendous individual, a fantastic coach who loved soccer and a terrific friend for many of us.

"This is truly a sad day for our soccer community and we will do our utmost to help authorities in their investigation of this case. Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael's family at this time."

Paying tribute to Jones, roommate Karl Hogan said: "I lived with him for a month but he was a great roommate. A nice guy, his passion was for Liverpool. He was a huge Liverpool fan."
