'You'll have to wait, Wayne'
As he prepares to lead out England as captain on his 99th international appearance, Steven Gerrard insists representing his country is as exciting as it has ever been - and has told Wayne Rooney he'll have to wait to take his armband.
The Liverpool skipper will move within one cap of a century for the Three Lions - an achievement only accomplished by five players - when England take on Poland on Tuesday.
Gerrard made his international debut more than 12 years ago, but the midfielder's passion remains the same.

He said on Monday: "I'm coming up to my 99th cap but I'm loving it as much as if it was my first.
"I've been around the set-up an awful long time. But I don't feel old, I'm not getting bored with it. I still feel fresh, looking forward to the game as much as my debut.
"Every time you put the England shirt on it is a proud moment and to get 99 is a fantastic achievement for myself. But it will only be a good memory for me if we get the three points."
Roy Hodgson's England are currently top of Group H after their 5-0 thrashing of San Marino on Friday, during which Wayne Rooney captained the side due to a suspension for Gerrard.
The armband will be returned to the Reds' No.8 against Poland, however, and Gerrard has no intention of relinquishing the responsibility any time soon.
"Wayne did a good job, we got three points, he played well himself, he scored twice, he behaved himself, it was all good," the 32-year-old explained.
"But I'm hoping he will have to wait a while. I'm really enjoying the role. I had to wait a long time for it to come to me. I want to enjoy it before I pass it over."
Gerrard also discussed the challenge of retaining his position in the starting XI, with young players such as club teammate Jonjo Shelvey working hard for a first-team promotion.
"It is great for English football that we are producing these players. They are the players that are keeping the likes of myself on my toes," said Gerrard.
"I know I've got to keep a consistency in my game at this level to stay in the team. All the experienced players are aware of that."
