Gerrard satisfied with Poland point
Steven Gerrard admits there was room for improvement in England's performance during Wednesday's draw with Poland – but insists he was satisfied to pick up a point.
The Three Lions ground out a 1-1 draw in the re-arranged game in Warsaw, with Gerrard setting up Wayne Rooney's opener before Kamil Glik levelled for the hosts.
"Time will tell as we will have to see what happens at the end of the group but it's a decent point," reflected the Liverpool and England captain afterwards.
"The lads are slightly disappointed because we know we can play better than that.
"Having taken the lead, we should have seen the game out and taken the three points but it wasn't to be.
"I thought they handled the pitch slightly better than us which was the disappointing thing. But we're not going to grumble taking a point away from here.
"Our points tally could be better but this is a tough place to come. They are a fantastic team on the counter attack.
"I don't think anyone in the group will come here and take maximum points. I believe this point will prove to be a good point."
The game went ahead in Warsaw 24 hours after it was originally postponed due to heavy rain.
Gerrard admits conditions were still difficult, but is refusing to use that as an excuse.
"It was difficult conditions and a difficult pitch but we can't use that as an excuse," he said.
"The pitch was slippy, wet, cutting. I think it was laid a week and a half ago. So it wasn't ideal. Both teams tried to make the most of it and they did it better.
"We did okay until we scored but never built on the one-goal lead. We never passed the ball well enough, for whatever reason."
He added: "When you're fired-up, pumped-up, you've had your massages and you're ready to go, that's not ideal (when the game is called off).
"But we're professionals. We're playing at the top level and we had to get ourselves up for this but I didn't think we were totally at the races."
