Jonjo: Dominance deserved more
Jonjo Shelvey insists Liverpool didn't get what they deserved following the 2-1 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night - but claims the team can take a lot of heart from their performance.
After goals from Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale had put Spurs 2-0 up, Liverpool's No.33 came on in the second half and almost inspired a late comeback.
His corner saw Bale deflect into his own net to give the Reds a lifeline, but despite the late pressure Tottenham held on to seal the three points.
"I thought we deserved more than what we got from the game and to be honest we dominated the game for long periods," Shelvey told Liverpoolfc.com.
"I thought we played well and had a few chances to score but we didn't take them and paid the price in the end.
"We also felt a little hard done by. It was frustrating when they got the free-kick for the second goal because I thought Jordan [Henderson] won the ball and we could have had a penalty with Stevie.
"That went against us which it does sometimes in football and we just have to keep going and keep playing our football and try and get the three points against Southampton on Saturday."
The England international has now turned his attention to Saturday's Anfield meeting with the Saints, and after an impressive appearance off the bench at White Hart Lane the midfielder is hoping to get the nod to return to the starting XI.
He added: "You want to start every game and it was a bit frustrating not to start tonight, but all you can do is show the manager what you can do when he brings you on.
"I will be training as hard as I can to try and get in the team on Saturday and impress the boss, because we need the three points and I want to do my best for the team.
"Southampton are a good footballing side and they have had some good results recently, but if we play like we did against Wigan in our last home game then there is no reason why we can't get the three points."
