LFC launch 1st Indian Twitter account

The @LFCIndia account, which tweets in English, officially launched on Saturday afternoon and proved an instant hit with Indian supporters all over the world.

Within two hours of launching, over 1,000 fans had followed the account and the first two tweets, 'Namaste India! Welcome to the official Liverpool FC Twitter account for Indian fans all over the world' and 'Liverpool FC is proud to become the first European football club to launch an official Twitter account for our Indian fanbase' were retweeted over 650 times.

The launch of @LFCIndia is the latest development from Liverpool FC in a new programme of international expansion that aims to help connect millions of supporters all around the world with the club they love.

Last month the club launched its first ever local-language Twitter accounts to communicate with fans in Thailand and Indonesia with both proving particularly popular. @OfficialLFC_ID, the account for Indonesian fans, already has over 20,000 followers while @ThaiLFC has established itself as the largest LFC Twitter account in Thailand.

Earlier in the month, the club also extended its reach on Chinese social media. With almost 400,000 followers of the official LFC account on Sina Weibo, Liverpool FC launched a new account on the Tencent platform on December 14.

However, the Indian Twitter account is a first for the club in that as language is clearly not a barrier; it focuses purely on country-specific content.

"Liverpool has a large fan base in India," claimed Paul Rogers, LFC's Head of International Digital Development, "and we're delighted that LFC is the first English club to really acknowledge that support. I was fortunate enough to witness just how passionate the fans were when I visited Mumbai last year with Ian Rush and this Twitter launch is an official recognition of just how much we value our Indian fans all over the world.

"Unlike our recent Thai and Indonesian Twitter launches, @LFCIndia will tweet in English but what makes it different from our global @LFC account is the content offering. This account is managed in Delhi and Liverpool and will focus purely on delivering a tailored experience for Indian fans all over the world."
