'Fourth place is up for grabs'
A consistent second half to the campaign could secure fourth place for Liverpool – that's the belief of former Reds midfielder Ray Houghton.
Nine points currently separate Brendan Rodgers' side from the top four and Champions League qualification, and Houghton considers the competition to be wide open.
"This season, more than any other, fourth place is up for grabs between Tottenham, Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool," the 51-year-old told talkSPORT.
"The next few matches will show us exactly where they are.
"I'd love to see them up there competing for a top four position. In the middle of November, I actually thought there was a chance.
"If you looked at their run of games, they only had Tottenham who were a top-four side to play - and I felt if Liverpool could have a consistent run they'd be close to the top four.
"They're not too far away.
"They're nowhere near Manchester United or Manchester City, but they're not too far away from fourth place. If they can sustain a run between now and the end of the season, who knows?"
Rodgers strengthened his options with the signing of Daniel Sturridge at the beginning of the month, and was further boosted by the return from injury of Fabio Borini.
And more additions could prove to be the difference in the top-four race according to Houghton.
He added: "Sturridge coming in has given them an extra body going forward, someone who can score a few goals and take the club forward. Borini is coming back so there's more depth.
"I'd still like to see another two or three players come in before the end of the transfer window, because I think they need a bit more depth - maybe a defender and midfield player.
"Then they could compete for a top-four spot."
