Chairman joins Gerrard tributes
Liverpool chairman Tom Werner paid a special tribute to Steven Gerrard after watching the Reds' skipper collect the Football Writers' Association Tribute Award in London on Sunday night.
Werner joined manager Brendan Rodgers, managing director Ian Ayre, former manager Gerard Houllier and club ambassador Ian Rush at the event which was held in Gerrard's honour at The Savoy Hotel.
Jamie Carragher was also part of the 400-strong audience, who looked on as the accolade, awarded to those who have made an outstanding contribution to the national game, was presented to Gerrard.
"It was a privilege to be at the event where our captain was honoured for the incredible career he has enjoyed, both for Liverpool and his country," said Werner.
"Steven is a fantastic role model for anyone wishing to pursue a career in professional sport. The way he conducts himself on and off the field is exemplary; we are blessed to have his talent and leadership as we look to take our club back to where it belongs.
"The evening was recognition of the contribution he has made to football in England, not just in Liverpool. To see the respect he commands and how much he is admired in the wider football community demonstrates just how special he is.
"The tributes paid on the night, by Gerard Houllier, Gary McAllister and Jamie Carragher, were also fitting for the occasion."
