RIP the 'Merseyside Matthews'
Tributes are today being paid to former Liverpool winger Jimmy Payne who has sadly passed away at the age of 86.
Payne had the distinction of playing for both Liverpool and Everton and was affectionately dubbed the 'Merseyside Matthews'.
He played in the 1950 FA Cup final for Liverpool and went on to play 243 games in a red shirt, netting 43 goals.
He was the last surviving member of the 1950 FA Cup final team - the first time Liverpool played at Wembley.
Payne played in the same Liverpool team as the likes of Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley and made his Reds bow in September 1948 against Bolton.
Daughter Shirley Morgan said: "For the last eight years my dad has been in a home and it was a bit of a struggle but he fought to the bitter end, bless him. Thankfully he's at peace now."
