'Liddell had to move for him'
As part of our 100 Players Who Shook the Kop poll, we're taking an in-depth look at lesser-known stars from the club's history – and this second instalment examines the impact of wide-man Alan A'Court.
"Alan was a true professional, a footballing hero for his style and personality," explained Stephen Done, LFC curator.
"He was so good that Billy Liddell had to move position to accommodate him.
"A'Court was cool and appreciated in a team that was in the 2nd Division and anything but cool.
"Bill Shankly was notoriously taciturn and fickle in his praise of players but he singled A'Court out for particular mention.
"He was clearly a gentleman, a pro and a good team player - and the Liverpool crowd liked him too."
A'Court arrived at Anfield in 1952, making his debut the following year. He remains the youngest player to reach 200 league appearances for the club, which he did aged 24 years and 89 days.
In total, he represented the club on 381 occasions and found the target 63 times from his wing position.
