Glen Johnson has paid tribute to Steven Gerrard for his consistency in an England shirt.

After completing a century of caps in November last year - only the sixth player to do so for the Three Lions - the Reds midfielder was named England Player of the Year for the second time in his career last night.

"He's been a key member of any team he's been involved in for many years," the defender reflected to Sky Sports.

Johnson has racked up 44 appearances at international level himself but laughed off suggestions that he could one day match his captain.

"I wouldn't say that!" the 28-year-old said.

"I'm happy with what I'm doing and I'm playing at the moment - the longer that continues, the better."

Johnson was also quizzed about the impact of January signing Daniel Sturridge, who has found the net four times in his six outings for the Reds since joining from Chelsea.

"He's been a great signing for us, he's helped us massively so far and I'm sure that will continue," Johnson enthused.

"He scares defenders to death when he gets in spaces and squares people up one-on-one."
