Liddell: One of the greatest
The fourth part of our journey through the archives with 100 Players Who Shook the Kop features a man many still consider to be Liverpool's greatest ever player – Billy Liddell.
At a time when the club was struggling, the Scottish forward delighted the watching Anfield crowd with his skilful dribbling, creativity and thunderbolt finishing.
Asked to summarise Liddell's impact for the Reds, LFC curator Stephen Done said: "He was arguably one of the greatest ever servants of LFC - up there with Kenny Dalglish."
Fellow hall-of-famer Donald MacKinlay believed Liddell was not just one of Liverpool's greatest players but among the best to have ever played the game.
"What can you say about him?" he commented in 1955.
"Liverpool have had some good club players, but I think he is the finest in their history. I used to do a bit of running around, but he does a lot more than I ever did.
"[Stanley] Matthews is a great entertainer, but for me that Liddell man is "It". He is one of the greatest club men ever to have played football."
