The Reds captain enjoyed an outstanding month, during which he made five appearances and scored one goal - a stunning long-range strike against Norwich City.

Gerrard collected 29 per cent of the vote on this website to see off competition from Jordan Henderson (24 per cent) and Luis Suarez (23 per cent). New signing Daniel Sturridge completed the top four having tallied 14 per cent.

It comes in a month when our No.8 has been honoured by the Football Writers' Association for his contribution to the national game.

Upon being presented with the award at Melwood today, Gerrard told Liverpoolfc.com: "It's always special when it's from the supporters - in the last couple of weeks I've received some big awards, which is nice. This tops the month off, it's fantastic and I'm really happy.

"I think I've been quite consistent in January. I felt there was a spark missing early on in the season – maybe that was because I was coming off a big tournament. But in the last two or three months, my form has picked up and it's exactly where I want it to be. Hopefully I can maintain that until the end of the season.

"The difference at the moment is assists and goals added to good performances. At the beginning of the season sometimes I was playing well but maybe the goals and assists weren't there. That's why people are saying good things about my performances now."

Asked for his message to the fans, Gerrard added: "It's a big thank-you. We want them to keep supporting us until the end of the season. The targets are the same as they were at the beginning of the season – to finish in the top four and have a good push in the Europa League to give them a trophy back."
