Rodgers: I'll get the right reaction
Brendan Rodgers is convinced he will get the desired response from his players to their West Brom disappointment when Liverpool return to action against Zenit St Petersburg on Thursday night.
The Reds slipped to a shock 2-0 reversal to the Baggies at Anfield on Monday and while the manager believes they gave their all in their attempts to win, he accepts his side did not perform at their best.
Nevertheless, Rodgers is certain he will see a reaction when his charges travel to Russia for the first leg of the Europa League last 32 tie with Zenit.
He told Liverpoolfc.com: "These players always react very well. They were very disappointed, like we all were, last night because we wanted to make our home form better in the league.
"That's something we'd done, especially of late. We entered into the game against West Brom with the best defensive home record in the league, so that shows the mark of improvement we were making as a group.
"It's something that left the players disappointed, but they will react in the right manner. They're good guys here, they want to work well and they're very good at moving on. That's something we'll have to do if we want to progress."
The clash with Zenit is the second match in a busy week for Liverpool, which will also see Swansea City visit Anfield on Sunday.
Rodgers knows his players can ill afford to dwell on their West Brom frustrations.
"There's no doubt it was a disappointment, especially because of our recent performances," he continued.
"The players gave everything in the game. It wasn't our best performance overall, but in terms of the effort and commitment they couldn't have given any more and we looked like the team that was eventually going to break through, so to end up losing the game was bitterly disappointing.
"We just have to keep striving and look towards the next game. We've got the Europa League game on Thursday night, which is a good opportunity for us to progress in a competition, and then we've got the league game at home to Swansea.
"We've got to get the disappointment out of our mind and refocus on our next game."
Liverpool were back at Melwood on Tuesday morning, with players involved against the Baggies undergoing recovery work while those who weren't were put through their paces to maintain fitness.
Rodgers explained: "The players that played last night were mainly on their first day of recovery - that's where they have to get over the exertions within the game. They recover with our sports science and medical team, who assess them and any injuries. They'll recover well because a lot of them will be involved on Thursday night.
"The players who weren't involved had a good training session this morning, worked very hard and intensely, and it keeps them topped up with their football fitness so if they're required for any of the games, they'll be fit enough to come in and play."
