One of Spain's most prestigious sporting awards ceremonies paid tribute to Liverpool fans for their relentless support to the Hillsborough families.

The Mundo Deportivo Sports Gala dedicated their honour for 'best supporters' to Reds supporters, in recognition of their campaign to reveal the truth about what happened at the tragedy in April 1989.

Margaret Aspinall, chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, has fought for justice for nearly 24 years and she travelled to Barcelona to collect the award on behalf of Liverpool fans.

"I think it's great that the fans have been recognised in Spain for the support they have shown for the families and the campaign for justice for all these years," said Margaret.

"The ceremony was fantastic and the reception we received was overwhelming. I was honoured to collect the award on behalf of all our fans."

The honour will be proudly displayed in a dedicated Hillsborough section in the Liverpool museum at Anfield.

Ian Ayre, Liverpool's managing director, said: "Everyone at Liverpool Football Club is delighted and proud that our fans from all around the world have been recognised in the part they continue to play in supporting the Hillsborough families.

"We all admire the dignity and tenacity that the families display in their long fight for justice and it's support like this that provides strength and demonstrates what we're all about."

The award ceremony is organised by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo and is now in its 65th year.

There were 16 further awards handed out during the course of the night including best sportsman and best sportswoman, which were received by FC Barcelona midfielder, Andres Iniesta, and Spanish swimmer, Mireia Belmonte.
