Steven Gerrard has backed Liverpool teammate Luis Suarez to be player of the year for 2012-13.

The Uruguayan has been in supreme goalscoring form throughout the campaign, extending his tally to 23 in all competitions with his strike at home to Swansea on Sunday.

Suarez trails only Robin van Persie in the race for the Barclays Premier League Golden Boot and has created 74 chances for his colleagues to date.

Those performances have led Reds captain Gerrard to name Suarez as not just the best in England, but further afield too.

"For me he's been player of the year, across this league and a lot more leagues," the 32-year-old told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"There are probably only one or two people who you could say have been better than him this season."

The No.7 has notched 44 goals in 88 appearances since arriving at Anfield in January 2011.

Suarez signed a fresh long-term contract with Liverpool in August of last year and Gerrard is excited by the prospect of the 26-year-old improving further.

"How much better can he get? I'm not sure, but it's a scary thought if he does improve on how he's been performing this season," he added.
