Jan Molby has outlined the method he believes Liverpool should use to eliminate Zenit St Petersburg this evening.

Aware that his former club require at least two goals against the Russians, the ex-Red suggested a simple plan - score one in each half.

"An early goal would be perfect tonight but we don't need to throw the kitchen sink at them too early," the Dane told the Liverpool Echo.

"When you look at it as only needing to score once every 45 minutes to force extra time it certainly looks possible.

"There was encouragement in the first leg to believe Liverpool will create a lot of chances and Zenit did look vulnerable at the back."

The last time Liverpool turned around a deficit of this size was 22 years ago, when Molby scored as Graeme Souness' side recovered to knock out Auxerre.

Molby added: "There's a chance for someone to be a hero at Anfield tonight.

"With Daniel Sturridge missing, a lot rests on the shoulders of Luis Suarez but Liverpool can't simply rely on their top scorer if they want to stay in the Europa League.

"It's going to take a huge collective effort to overturn that 2-0 deficit against Zenit St Petersburg but if someone can make that tie-winning contribution their efforts will live long in the memory.

"The fact Liverpool have only come back from two or more goals down after a first leg to progress once in 11 previous attempts underlines the size of the challenge facing Brendan Rodgers' side.

"But I know it can be done because I was part of the side who achieved it against Auxerre at Anfield back in 1991.

"There's not a great deal of difference between Auxerre's standing in 1991 and Zenit's standing now."
