Downing: He must be a nightmare
After watching Luis Suarez destroy Wigan with a scintillating hat-trick, Liverpool teammate Stewart Downing shuddered at the thought of having to defend against the 'nightmare'.
The Uruguayan established himself as the Barclays Premier League's top scorer with his treble at the DW Stadium and increased his record for the 2012-13 campaign to 28 strikes.
Downing, who broke the deadlock himself against the Latics, heaped praised on the Reds' No.7 post-match and found his flattering words backed by goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
"He must be a nightmare for defenders," Downing told ESPN.
"He can be quiet in games and you've got to be on your toes at all times because he can score anything out of nothing.
"You saw that with his goals today, top quality finishes. He's been brilliant for us all season."
Reina agreed: "He gets a goal from nothing, he can score different kinds of goals - create them himself and also give assists to the other teammates. It's brilliant."
Although the Reds were dominant for the vast majority of the teatime encounter, the Spaniard was forced into several impressive stops to ensure the visitors' sheet remained clean.
"From the beginning we were really into the game, we couldn't have started better with the early goal," Reina added.
"From there, we wanted to defend and keep a clean sheet. The most important thing is always the victory and three points.
"I'm more than happy with that but if you can make a couple of good saves, it's good."
The result extended the Reds' winning run to three games in all competitions, during which time they have found the back of the net 12 times.
Downing described the performance of Brendan Rodgers' side this evening as 'perfect'.
"We wanted to start the game really well so getting the early goal settled us down and we could play some football," said the 28-year-old.
"I thought we were the better team, especially the first half; we scored some great goals and thoroughly deserved the win.
"We've had some big wins of late and great attacking play. We're defending well as a team.
"I thought that was the perfect performance again, like Swansea - that was a big win and a big performance. It's coming together quite well and we just need to keep progressing."
