Liverpool U21s battled back from a goal down to clinch a crucial point against Southampton at St Mary's on Monday night.

Alex Inglethorpe's side fell behind when Vegard Forren volleyed past Peter Gulacsi on the half-hour mark.

However, with just over 10 minutes remaining, Krisztian Adorjan ghosted into the penalty area and nodded home a pinpoint Jonjo Shelvey cross to seal a point for the Reds.

Southampton had the ball in the net on 18 minutes. Alberto Seidi's subtle touch guided the ball beyond Gulacsi; however, the offside flag was raised and the strike was ruled-out.

Moments later full-back Calum Chambers rattled the post for the Saints.

Liverpool's first real chance fell to Adam Morgan after Suso's sumptuous pass carved the opposition defence in two. Morgan was onto it in a flash but after speeding clear of his marker, he side-footed wide.

Southampton broke the deadlock in style on 30 minutes. Liverpool failed to clear their lines from a corner and the loose ball bobbled into the path of debutant Forren, who was composed as he volleyed the Saints ahead.

On 41 minutes, Shelvey's shot hit the back of the net but the fourth official deemed Adorjan to have been offside when he nudged the powerful effort beyond Paulo Gazzaniga.

After the interval it was the Saints' turn to have another goal ruled out for offside after substitute Sam McQueen tapped home Jake Sinclair's cross.

Neat link-up play released Wisdom down the right channel and the 19-year-old tucked the ball back inside for Suso, whose low effort was scooped off the line.

Then, on 78 minutes, Adorjan secured a point for the Reds when he lost his marker in the penalty area and nodded Shelvey's cross beyond the 'keeper.

Suso might have clinched a last-minute victory for the visitors when he snaked his way through a packed penalty area but could only fire at the legs of Gazzaniga.
