A host of celebrities - including Spice Girl Mel C - will join participants on the last leg of the 96-mile Hillsborough to Anfield run to raise money for two children’s hospital charities.

The 39-year-old singer will be joined by British heavyweight champion David Price, BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Spoony, impressionist Darren Farley and former Everton midfielder Peter Reid.

Mel said: "I'm really looking forward to joining these guys as they complete their incredible run. To raise money for children's charities whilst running in the memory of Hillsborough - something close to my heart - makes it extra special.

"Running 96 miles in three days is a phenomenal achievement and something I'm glad I'm not doing personally, but I'm pleased to be able to lend my support by crossing the finishing line with them."

The second annual Hillsborough to Anfield run will take place next month.

The three-day run will raise money for Alder Hey Children's hospital and Sheffield's the Children's Hospital charity and is taking place in memory of the 96 Reds fans who lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster.

Led by team leader Dominic Williams, the runners will travel 96 miles, starting on April 4 from pitchside at Hillsborough stadium to the hallowed turf of Anfield.

Shadow Health Secretary, Andy Burnham, and MP for Walton, Steve Rotheram, will also join the seven runners and celebrities for the final mile as they make their way through the Shankly Gates. Both were instrumental in the setting up of the Hillsborough Independent Panel report and historic debate in the Commons.

Also joining the runners for the final stretch are Sue Roberts and Claire McGlone from the Hillsborough Family Support Group and Steve Kelly from the Hillsborough Justice Campaign.

Williams said: "We're humbled by the support that people have given so far to raise money for these two worthwhile charities.

"We all know times are tight for everyone at the moment, but we're asking people to give whatever they can - no matter how small - as every penny goes to helping sick children. These wonderful people are giving their time, profile and the odd blister to help raise that money - that's worth a donation on its own!
