Skipper: My header was predicted
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard won the match at Villa Park for the Reds on Sunday and then revealed that somebody had earlier predicted his head would prove all-important.
The skipper stroked home a spot-kick after Jordan Henderson had cancelled out Christian Benteke's opener, to hand Brendan Rodgers' side three points at the expense of Aston Villa.
But equally important was Gerrard's subsequent headed clearance off the goalline from Benteke's attempt to ensure the Reds would return to Merseyside victorious.
Post-match, the 32-year-old explained that a friend had forecast that the midfielder's head would make a match-winning contribution.
"One of my close friends was giving me stick about my hair before the game, and said that I might score the winner with my head today," Gerrard told Sky Sports.
"The penalty was the winner but I think the header actually won us the game, so he was right in the end. That's what the celebration was about.
"We had to show a lot of character, we had to raise it a little bit at half-time. We felt hard done by to be trailing at half-time.
"After the first 45 minutes we should have been at least level. But we found ourselves 1-0 down so we needed an extra ten per cent.
"That's what you need to do: go out after half-time and score as early as you can. That gave us the belief and the confidence to go on and win the game."
What did Rodgers say to his charges at half-time to prompt the impressive comeback?
"Keep doing what you're doing, with a little bit more belief - take a few more risks in their final third. It came off today," added Gerrard.
"We want to win every game and finish as high as we can. If we can maybe nick fifth or sixth, that's what we'll try to do."
With Henderson thriving in an advanced midfield role in the Midlands, Gerrard dictated play from a deeper position - flexibility the skipper feels runs throughout the squad.
He said: "We've been doing that all season, flipping it from two holders and one in front to one holder and two in front. We have the personnel in the squad to adapt to what the manager asks for."
