Raheem Sterling has revealed how words of wisdom from Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard helped the youngster shine when he made his full Anfield debut against Manchester City.

After making his Liverpool bow as a substitute during 2011-12, Sterling was catapulted into the first team following the arrival of Brendan Rodgers as manager last summer.

His early ascent was aided by both the Reds skipper and support from the boss.

"It was probably my best performance," Sterling told Goal.com, reflecting on the clash with City in August 2012.

"Purely because it was my first game, with so much pressure and against last season's champions. I was proud of myself afterwards.

"Before the game, Gerrard told me it was just an older version of the U18s. He said not to worry about it and just to go out there and give my best, so that's what I did.

"At the start of the season the manager said to all the young players that if we did well in training and had the right commitment and attitude, he wouldn't be afraid to throw us in, no matter what our age.

"But I didn't expect to play so many games. I thought I'd make a few sub appearances. It's great to be given a chance, and I've got to thank the manager. I'm really grateful."

Rodgers has discussed the need to 'nurture' Sterling on a regular basis throughout the campaign and the 18-year-old has been rested from senior duty in recent weeks.

"Playing so many games at such a young age is tough," the winger added.

"Old school people say you should just get on with it and stop moaning, but it's a lot to ask of a young lad to be playing 90 minutes every week, so it's been good to get a break."
