'I'd take half of Gerrard's career'
Given the shared characteristics of the two players, it should perhaps come as no surprise that Liverpool U21 captain Conor Coady has identified Steven Gerrard as the man to emulate at Anfield.
The pair, both born in Liverpool and both energetic, dynamic midfielders, share a passion to succeed with the Reds.
The senior man, Gerrard, has seen and done practically everything in football.
At 20 years of age, Coady, on the other hand, potentially has a Liverpool lifetime ahead of him and has admitted that achieving even 50 per cent of what the England skipper has would fulfil his ambitions.
"If you could emulate half the things he's done, you would have some career," Coady told Liverpoolfc.com. "To come in and watch him train, and train alongside him every day, is fantastic. You can only learn from him.
"When you're playing with him it's superb because you learn from what he does, the way he passes a ball and the way he gets into space to receive a ball."
The versatile youngster, who has previously operated in a central defensive role, highlighted the need to improve his own ability upon receiving the ball; fortunately, he is willing to learn.
He continued: "Hopefully I can do that over pre-season and next season. I like to say I could have a go in most positions, wherever they want to play me.
"But I feel like I'm a central midfield player and to go and learn how to play that position properly will be top-drawer for me."
Having been promoted through the youth levels at Anfield - Coady is a former captain of the club's U18s side - the Englishman has thrived under U21s boss Alex Inglethorpe and remained closely on the fringes of Brendan Rodgers' first team.
A full senior debut arrived in November 2012, when Coady was selected from the start for the Reds' Europa League tie with Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia. It's a moment he will never forget.
"For anyone to make their debut is fantastic, it's the best feeling I've ever had. When I made my debut, it was the best night of my life," added the No.35.
"I just hope there are more nights like that to come. To be a local lad and play for Liverpool is absolutely amazing.
"I've started playing in that midfield role in front of the back four now and I'm really enjoying it. To work under both managers is fantastic; you respect them very much and you love working under them.
"They come in and tell you how to play and what they want from you. You just do that and try to do that to the best of your ability. For me to listen to them, work under them and learn as much as I can from them is fantastic.
"Rodolfo Borrell has been put in charge of the whole Academy; he's brought Alex in, who knows the 4-3-3 system. It's fantastic to play it at reserve level because then you know what the manager wants when you do come up to first-team level.
"Brendan talks to all the lads - it's superb the way he talks to them and he makes you feel welcome when you come up here. I think it's hard not to learn things when you're up here, they're all fantastic players. To learn from the likes of Carragher and Gerrard is superb."
That education can be delivered in various areas - technical, physical and professional - according to Coady, who was named among the substitutes in the Reds' most recent Barclays Premier League fixture.
"You learn their way of life and their way of working. You look at the way they work and how much effort they put into every training session - even now it's superb. As a young lad coming up, that's what you want to see," he reflected.
"You see them in the gym every day and they look after their bodies. They're in their 30s now and they're still as fit as ever. To look at the way they live life on a daily basis can only help us young lads as players."
