Borini: That was for you, lads
Fabio Borini admitted it was a big moment for him to register his first Premier League goal in a red shirt on his return from injury during the 6-0 win at Newcastle United on Saturday.
Many thought the Italian international wouldn't play again in 2012-13 after he dislocated his shoulder during the 5-0 win over Swansea City in February.
However, hard work and a real determination to get back into action has paid off and he couldn't hide his delight after his first in the top-flight at St James' Park.
"It was big emotion for me to score my first goal in the Premier League for Liverpool, especially after a long injury and a long wait for it," Borini told Liverpoolfc.com.
"What made it even better for me was that it came in front of the Liverpool supporters so I could celebrate with them. I just wanted to thank them for the support and they have really helped me through my injuries."
He added: "It's been hard. When I hurt my shoulder, they said my season could be over. But I fought back as I really needed to come back earlier.
"I took the minimum possible to get back training which was eight weeks instead of 12. Some people probably didn't think I could make it but I fought back.
"We have always been together as a group and I think the performance against Newcastle showed that.
"I can play a big part now not because Luis is suspended but because I am back fit. Whether Luis is available or not, we all need to focus on doing our jobs."
Liverpool's No.29 was also keen to pay tribute to the support from Brendan Rodgers and his staff for the faith they have shown in him, and he gave a thumbs up to the bench during his celebrations.
He added: "The goal was also for the manager, the staff and my teammates because it has been hard for me but I wanted to thank them for the work they had done with me."
Borini is now hoping for a Merseyside derby debut when Everton visit Anfield next Sunday.
Having missed the Goodison derby due to injury, the striker is eager for a chance to shine.
He said: "It will be my first derby and I can't wait. I have played for Roma against Lazio in the derby so I know the feeling about this match and what it means to the supporters.
"I think this will be a similar atmosphere to the Roma-Lazio derby and hopefully we can win the game."
Before making his entrance from the bench Borini admitted he couldn't help but be impressed by the display of Philippe Coutinho, who caused the Newcastle defence no end of problems.
"He's a great player and is very clever - the type of player we needed," said Borini.
"You can see he has played in Italy because tactically he knows the game very well despite being so young."
