LFC launch South Africa Twitter account
Liverpool FC has become the first football club in the world to launch a dedicated official Twitter account for fans in South Africa.
The Reds have a huge following in South Africa with almost half a million fans visiting the official LFC website already this year. In fact, since August 2012, the number of fans from South Africa visiting the website has increased by 66 per cent.
As recognition of this incredible show of support, fans in South Africa have become the latest set of international supporters to be granted an official LFC Twitter account. The new account aims to help bring fans closer to the club they support, enable a genuine two-way online conversation and deliver content tailored exclusively for them.
@SouthAfricaLFC - officially verified with a blue tick by Twitter on Monday and managed out of Cape Town and Johannesburg - has already proved a hit with fans. Within a day of going live, the account was being followed by over 1,000 fans.
The Reds last visited South Africa for a post-season game 19 years ago, when the squad were granted an audience with Nelson Mandela, who posed for pictures with the players in a Liverpool shirt.
Today's official announcement about the launch of @SouthAfricaLFC is the latest development in a programme of international digital activity that began in November 2012 and has seen the Reds become one of the most globally active football club's in the world.
Having made 2013 the year when the club would strive to bring the LFC global family closer together, Liverpool have launched 16 new social media accounts - many in local language - to enhance the supporter experience for fans all over the globe.
New local language official LFC Twitter accounts have been set up for fans in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, France, Bangladesh, Turkey as well as supporters in Arabic, Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries. Meanwhile, locally relevant Twitter accounts have been launched to cater for fans in Australia and New Zealand, India, Pakistan and now South Africa.
Away from Twitter, the club have also launched new Facebook pages for fans in India and Australia - with a Portuguese-language Facebook page going live last month to complement a Twitter account and LFC Instagram site specifically for Brazilian fans.
Further international launches on Twitter and Facebook, as well as two new local-language official LFC websites, will be announced in the coming weeks.
