Jason McAteer has offered an insight into what it's like to pull on the Liverpool shirt as a Scouser in the heat of the Merseyside derby.

McAteer, who supported the Reds as a youngster, was involved in six battles against the Blues during his four-year Anfield career.

He explained how being a local in one of football's most ferocious derbies can require extra discipline and focus as emotions run high.

"Sometimes it can actually be a hindrance being a Scouser and playing for Liverpool in the derby," McAteer told Liverpoolfc.com.

"That combination can be detrimental to your performances.

"I remember when I played in the derbies I'd get too emotionally attached to the game and get fired up.

"You can sometimes end up losing your discipline on the pitch. You end up wanting to do too much. You end up getting involved in things that you shouldn't - the fans, the game and personal battles with different players.

"It's one of the hardest games to play."
