Brendan Rodgers has assessed the form of striker Andy Carroll at loan club West Ham and commended the 24-year-old for his desire to play first-team football.

Carroll joined the Hammers for a season-long loan at the beginning of the 2012-13 campaign and has notched seven league goals for the London outfit.

"In terms of Andy, it has been good to see the bit of form he has shown now towards the end of the season," the boss told reporters gathered at Melwood.

"He has obviously had a difficult season as a whole because of injury, so it's been a little bit frustrating.

"I suppose it's similar to last season, he showed that bit of form here at the end of last season and he's obviously shown that again at West Ham.

"The idea for Andy to go out was to get games; he wanted to play, he didn't want to be sat here playing second fiddle to anyone and I commend that because some players are happy to maybe sit on the bench and not play.

"But he wanted to go out and play football. He's gone to West Ham, which is a great club, and under Sam Allardyce he's done very well. So we'll assess that at the end of the season and take it from there."

Another player under discussion was defender Martin Kelly, who is nearing a return to full fitness after a season ruined by unfortunate injury.

Rodgers added: "It's great for Martin, he's worked very hard. He was outstanding for me in pre-season and obviously started the season in the team.

"He was unfortunate to pick up a really bad injury. He's worked very hard in getting back; he has been outstanding in his application.

"It has been a great boost for him because that was the target - to get back training and working with the group at the end of the season and then hopefully he'll strengthen his knee up over the course of the next number of weeks and he'll be fit and raring to go in pre-season."
