Jamie Carragher reflected on the moment he thought his final Liverpool appearance had been marked with a sensational goal and admitted: 'I thought it was in'.

The 35-year-old said a fond farewell to Anfield following the Reds' straightforward 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday afternoon.

Goals were a rare thing during the defender's 17 years at the club but he almost bowed out in the greatest of style with a powerful, dipping volley which bounced away off the woodwork midway through the second half.

"I'll have to watch it again on LFC TV, I thought it was in. It was one of those things - it gives everyone something to talk about tonight," he told LFC TV post-match.

"I'm not the type to get too emotional but it is emotional.

"I've got my friends and family in the stands; I just wanted to concentrate on the game.

"We got the win that we wanted and I can go and enjoy myself now.

"It's brilliant. We always have a great time at the last game of the season. It was a special send-off for me and a day I'll never forget.

"I've been playing here a long time and it's sad to think I'll never play at this stadium again in a competitive game.

"But it has to come to an end at some stage and I've got some great memories."
