Fabio Borini claimed the spoils at the expense of three Liverpool teammates as Italy downed England 1-0 at the European U21 Championship in Israel.

Borini played 78 minutes for the Italians against a Three Lions side which included Jordan Henderson, Jack Robinson and Jonjo Shelvey from the start. Andre Wisdom was named on the bench.

After a goalless opening period, England had two strikes disallowed in bizarre circumstances in the second half. Shelvey was withdrawn with 15 minutes remaining and Italy took the lead shortly after, Lorenzo Insigne converting a free-kick.

Stuart Pearce's team could not produce a response and are now bottom of the standings following the first round of matches. Borini and Italy top the section by two points.

England play their second match against Norway on Saturday, June 8 at 5pm BST. Later that evening, Borini's Italy continue their Group A campaign by taking on hosts Israel.
