There was frustration for Jordan Henderson and Jonjo Shelvey as England U21s crashed out of the European U21 Championships in Israel after a 3-1 defeat to Norway on Saturday evening.

After the opening defeat to Italy, Stuart Pearce's side went into the game requiring at least a point to keep their qualifying hopes alive, but it was a bad night for the Young Lions.

Henderson captained the side and played the full 90 minutes while Jonjo Shelvey came on as a 66th minute replacement and Andre Wisdom played the final six minutes. Jack Robinson remained on the bench.

Fredrik Semb Berge and Jo Inge Berget both fired in the opening 45 minutes to put Norway firmly in control, and just after the restart Henderson went close with a great strike that was well saved.

The scoreline then became worse when Magnus Eikrem smashed an unstoppable effort into the net.

Craig Dawson pulled a goal back after 56 minutes from the penalty spot and Henderson headed wide late on from a Shelvey free-kick, but it was all too late for Pearce's side.

England U21s now play their final game against hosts Israel on Tuesday at 5pm BST.
