Luis Suarez converted a superb late free-kick as Uruguay kicked off their Confederations Cup campaign with a 2-1 defeat by reigning world and European champions Spain.

The 26-year-old started the match in Recife but could not prevent Spain from racing into a two-goal advantage through Pedro and Roberto Soldado.

With two minutes left on the clock, Suarez lashed home a brilliant, curling set-piece from the left hand side to provide hope for his country; Spain held on, however.

The goal was the Liverpool No.7's 33rd for Uruguay, moving him level with Diego Forlan in the top scorer standings for La Celeste.

Anfield colleagues Sebastian Coates and Pepe Reina were unused substitutes during the Group B encounter.

Suarez will return to action at the tournament when Uruguay meet Nigeria in Salvador on Thursday, with kick-off at 11pm BST.
