Pepe Reina watched from the sidelines as Spain won an enthralling penalty shoot-out to edge past Italy in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup following a 0-0 draw in normal time.

Reina, who played during Spain's 10-0 victory over Tahiti a week ago, was forced to settle for a place on the bench as Real Madrid's Iker Casillas was handed the gloves.

Nothing could separate the sides during a tense 120 minutes of football at the Estadio Castelao in Fortaleza on Thursday night.

Then came the nail-biting shoot-out, during which both teams held their nerve to each slot their first six penalties. However, after Leonardo Bonucci blazed his over the bar from 12 yards, Manchester City's Jesus Navas stepped up to seal the win for Spain.

The Spanish will now face hosts Brazil at the Maracana in the final of the tournament on Sunday.
