School pioneers day of Hillsborough learning
South Wirral High School will pioneer a day of teaching Year 10 students about the events surrounding the Hillsborough tragedy of 1989 later this month.
The plan follows a motion recently passed by the Wirral Borough Council calling for the disaster - at which 96 Liverpool supporters lost their lives - to become part of the curriculum.
Teachers Ryan Ellis and Graham Jones have organised the programme for Monday, July 15, with lessons on the various aspects of Hillsborough taking place throughout the day.
For the majority of the day, students will switch between the following four subjects:
The truth about Hillsborough - the facts of what happened, the subsequent cover-up, studying both the Taylor report and the Hillsborough Independent Panel report.
The role of the media in the Hillsborough disaster
The fight for justice - a creative writing task.
The legacy of Hillsborough - a look at football before and after Hillsborough.
Margaret Aspinall of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, the mayor and mayoress of Wirral, MP for Wirral South Alison McGovern, and Jimmy McGovern will all be in attendance during the afternoon.
The day will conclude with a series of dance and dramatic performances, plus an opportunity for the guests to further discuss the tragedy and its importance with students.
Aspinall commented: "It is absolutely great the school is holding a full day on what happened as nothing was learnt from previous football disasters.
"It is important to stress there was a big injustice done over Hillsborough. It took 23-and-a-half years to fight and get the truth on what happened on that terrible day.
"The truth came out on September 12, 2012 because of the Hillsborough Independent Panel report, and all the misapprehensions and lies were exposed."
