More than 100 cyclists from the Liverpool FC Foundation recently tackled 50 miles of the Chester Bike Ride to raise money for various charities, including the Foundation and children's hospice Claire House.

The ride was organised by one of the Foundation's flagship initiatives, the men's health programme, and in association with the North Liverpool Cycle Club and LCH Cycle for Health.

James Simons, who completed the ride for the Foundation, said: "Today has been another great day. Lovely weather, good cycling and fantastic people.

"The Foundation's cycling club has given me a reason to get fit and enjoy myself along the way."

The men's health programme was set up in 2005, in partnership with the Liverpool Clinical Commissioning Group, in response to the high levels of poor health in the local community.

Since then, healthy lifestyle courses have been set up including exercise classes, comedy workshops, weight management as well as a cycling club.

Many of the men had led inactive lifestyles before engaging with the programme but are starting to reap the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.

Mark Haig, the Liverpool FC Foundation's head of operations, said: "Once again this was a very enjoyable event. Cycling is a great way to get in some physical activity and meet new people. All ages and abilities took part and there was plenty of wit and laughs along the way."

Meanwhile, places are still available for a unique charity bike ride organised by the Liverpool FC Foundation to honour legendary Reds manager Bill Shankly in the lead-up to the 100th anniversary since his birth.
