Glen puts Gerrard in first place
Glen Johnson has lavished praise on Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard ahead of a sell-out testimonial at Anfield, against Olympiacos, to honour the man he would describe as the club's greatest ever player.
The landmark match, which kicks off at 12.45pm BST on Saturday, will be available to watch live on this website with an LFC TV Online subscription - as will subsequent friendlies against Valerenga and Celtic.
A teammate of Gerrard's for club and country, the 28-year-old has shared an Anfield dressing room with the No.8 for four years and feels that no-one deserves to be celebrated more than the Kop hero.
The full-back told LFC TV: "It's great to be involved - he's probably the best player that's ever played for Liverpool Football Club so to be a part of that is fantastic.
"No-one deserves it better than Stevie. He is Liverpool.
"He's always been there when the club have needed him, when the fans have needed him and when the players have needed him - he always turns up.
"He leads on the pitch. He's a great lad off the pitch but with the performances, when he needs to get in amongst it, he's the first to show up."
One of Gerrard's finest traits has always been his desire to win - something Johnson believes will make this weekend's fixture even more memorable.
"He's admirable," the England international continued. "Every day, even in the five-a-sides, he wants to win every game.
"He's always scoring, shooting - what he does on a Saturday, in training he's doing almost every day.
"I'm sure it won't be a usual testimonial. I'm sure it's going to be a more competitive game but that's great for us at this time of year.
"Like Stevie said, he wanted it more like a friendly, so it'll be good."
To mark the Liverpool captain's testimonial this weekend, the Steven Gerrard Foundation is auctioning 630 commemorative LFC shirts to raise money for charity. Click here to find out more.
