Liverpool Ladies suffered cruel fortune when they lost 4-2 on penalties in the semi-final of the Continental Cup on Wednesday night.

Matt Beard's side had made the perfect start at the Halton Stadium when goal machine Natasha Dowie fired the Reds in front with their first attack straight from the kick-off.

However, Lincoln Ladies equalised after 49 minutes and after a period of extra-time it stayed that way until the penalty shoot-out.

Inspired by England international stopper Karen Bardsley, she kept Lincoln in the game making some fantastic saves to deny Liverpool.

In the penalty shoot-out Bardsley was the hero as she saved from Natasha Dowie and Louise Fors, and Lincoln now go on to meet Arsenal or Everton in the final.

It was a cruel way for Beard's side to lose after they lost in the Women's FA Cup semi-final earlier on this season to Arsenal at Anfield.

They must hope to bounce back when they travel to league leaders Bristol Academy on Saturday evening.
