Matt Beard is hoping his table-topping Liverpool Ladies can cut out their defensive errors and gain another three points in a must-win Super League clash away at Doncaster Belles on Saturday night.

For two weeks in a row the Ladies have won vital league matches by the same 4-3 scoreline after dramatic late winners, but with reigning champions Arsenal breathing down their necks, the manager knows his team have to deliver in the pressure-cooker situation.

With five games to go, the Ladies have exceeded all expectations this season and Beard's main target is a top two spot, which would secure European football for the team next term in the Champions League.

Last weekend's 4-3 win over Chelsea saw the Ladies go three points clelar at the top of the league but with Arsenal having two games in hand, the clash at Doncaster is another all-important fixture for the side.

Matt, another 4-3 win for the second week running - you are making a bit of a habit of this aren't you?

It's a habit we don't really want to keep to be fair! It was a frustrating night to be honest with you. I think I've been quite diplomatic to be honest with you but Chelsea are a poor team. The positive thing to take is we won the game but we made it difficult for ourselves again, which disappointed me. I was pleased with the character that we showed, especially to go 3-2 down with 10 minutes to go and then go on and win the game. It was a frustrating night, though, from my point of view.

When you went 2-0 down inside the opening seven minutes, what were you and your staff thinking on the bench?

Knowing we score goals we still had 80 minutes to get back into the game, so if anything that was a good thing if I can say that. The two goals we conceded were poor from our end. Our goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill should have done better and we didn't protect ourselves. After that we played some good stuff and created some good chances. I was a little frustrated with our lack of composure in front of goal and we could have gone in at the break 3-2 or 4-2 up. I've got to give the players a lot of credit for the last 10 minutes of the game.

You changed your goalkeeper at half-time, bringing Rachel Laws back. Why was that?

Sarah never recovered from the mistake in the first minute and there were a couple of other things that had happened in the first half that left me no choice. Maybe I should have done it earlier, being honest, but Rachel came on and did okay. That was pleasing and it was a tough decision to make but I had to do it for the good of the team.

A player you signed from Germany, Nicole Rolser, was the hero with two goals and got the winner for you...

She was fantastic. Every time she got in a one v one with the full-back she caused problems. She put in a great ball for Natasha Dowie to make it 3-3 and then got the winner. Nicole is a good player who is difficult to play against for defenders because she is so direct and quick. She is now starting to add assists to her game and put the ball in the back of the net so that is pleasing.

Another 4-3 win for the second week running is probably not good for your health on the touchline but what that does tell us is the fantastic winning mentality you have in your team. How pleasing is that?

The character is unbelievable. I wasn't happy at half-time and I made my feelings known. We should have gone 3-2 up before Chelsea made it 3-2 when Dowie had a great chance, but the character the players showed was phenomenal. They don't know when they are beaten and that's a very, very good thing to have in the group. That was a massive three points for us because it takes us a little bit further away from Bristol, and on Saturday we have the opportunity to go six points clear of them before they resume their fixtures.

Next up you have the first of two meetings in the space of two weeks against Doncaster Belles. First is the away trip on Saturday - is six points the target?

We can't afford to drop any more points if we want to win the league so whether it's Doncaster or Bristol, we have got to pick up maximum points. Arsenal are in good form at the moment and playing some good football and scoring for fun, so it's out of our hands where we finish in the table with regards to winning it. We have to win all of our games and someone can do us a favour along the way and nick a point or two off Arsenal.

When women's football first came to the attention, Doncaster Belles were one of the teams to look out for - are they still one of the stand-out teams in the Super League?

Doncaster are a good side. They have got a lot of young players who will run through a brick wall for you and work hard, but we should have enough quality in our team to get the three points on Saturday night and I'm confident we will do that, but it certainly won't be an easy game. We beat them 1-0 in the Continental Cup at the start of the season and we found they all worked hard for each other.

Do you need to tighten up at the back and how do you go about doing that?

Well, we've got to stop the errors first and foremost. You can't make as many mistakes as we have defensively but that is down to individuals. It has concerned me since we have come back from the break to be honest with you. We have got a lot to improve on and if we can cut out the individual errors we will concede less and we know we can score more.

Arsenal still have the two games in hand and if they keep winning they would go top. Is that why it's imperative you take maximum points from your remaining five games?

We are quite fortunate in the sense that we are playing most of our games on a Saturday and Arsenal are playing the majority on a Sunday, so it keeps putting the pressure on them to see how they respond. What we have achieved this season has been massive. We want to win the league but if we finish in the top two that would be beyond and above the expectations I had at the start of the season. We need to continue put pressure on Arsenal and even if we finish second that would put us in the Champions League next season, which is another step in the right direction.
