Brendan Rodgers has delivered a glowing appraisal of Liverpool's new vice-captain, Daniel Agger, and reiterated the Danish defender's gratitude at being selected for the role.

The manager named Agger, who is approaching the eighth anniversary of his arrival at Anfield, as Steven Gerrard's deputy earlier this month following a summer of deliberation.

Rodgers' team have since kicked off their 2013-14 campaign with three victories - taking maximum points from two Barclays Premier League fixtures and progressing into the third round of the Capital One Cup.

Asked how Agger has adapted to his position of responsibility, the Northern Irishman pointed to the centre-back's quiet approach and respect within the dressing room as key aspects.

"He's a good lad, Dan," Rodgers told Liverpoolfc.com. "He was very honoured and very proud to take over the role.

"He's obviously been here a number of years. He's very well respected within the group. He's quite a quiet character - he doesn't say too much.

"But what he does say is to offer great advice to the younger players. You can see his seniority within the group.

"He's very calm and we had a nice chat this morning again about the role; he is certainly enjoying the responsibility of it.

"He's a guy that represents the club very well and he's very proud to have the position." [STORIFY_WIDGET]
