Liverpool chairman Tom Werner paid tribute to the supporters who made Anfield a cauldron of noise during the Reds' 1-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday.

Werner was on hand to watch Daniel Sturridge net the decisive goal early on in the game as Brendan Rodgers' side made it three wins out of three in the Barclays Premier League.

Afterwards, he told Liverpoolfc.com: "It was a fantastic day. The supporters were part of the success.

"It felt very much like we were level with Manchester United, and they were the best team in the league last year. So it seems like we're off to a terrific start.

"It's a long campaign, but we've done everything that our fans could hope for and we've kept three clean-sheets, so we're off to a good start."

While Werner was delighted with a third consecutive 1-0 win in the league, he was also keen not to put too much pressure on the manager and his players.

He continued: "I don't want to get too excited, but we got off to a less than auspicious start last year, so I'm delighted.

"This has been a terrific year so far. I don't want to set too many targets, but everyone has to be delighted with the start we've made."

The chairman was also quizzed about the possibility of new players arriving at the club before the transfer window shuts on Monday.

"I think I'd rather wait until tomorrow," he responded. "I don't want to say too much, but we are focused on trying to improve the squad."
